Wood Burning Boiler Project

Friday, 22-01-2010

A boiler house and fuel bunker is being built to house a woodchip boiler system. This will replace our existing oil boilers and will provide central heating and hot water for the whole Manor.

Advantages of the new woodfuel system:

·         The system will be fully automated with the wood chips mechanically fed into the boiler when required.

It will have all the features of a modern gas or oil heating system and will be highly efficient and smokeless, only producing a small amount of ash.

·         The system will be carbon neutral as the carbon dioxide released when burning the wood is balanced by that absorbed during the tree growth.

·         The woodchip fuel will be delivered by a local business and sourced from Cumbrian forests. So we will be supporting the local economy as well as using a sustainable fuel source.

·         At present, woodchips cost 68% of the price of oil. But in the future we may make much greater savings as oil supplies run low.

We are grateful to the Bio-energy Capital Grants Scheme, Bassenthwaite Reflections and the Christian Outdoor Pursuits Trust who are funding this project
